Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience — you're walking out of the shop with a fresh piece of art that’s uniquely yours. But after the ink settles, the healing process begins. Knowing what to expect over the coming days and weeks can help you care for your tattoo properly and avoid unnecessary worry.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the typical tattoo healing stages, what’s normal, and when it might be time to check in with your artist or a medical professional.

Stage 1: Oozing, Redness, and Tenderness (Days 1–3)

What’s Normal:Right after your session, your tattoo will feel like a fresh wound — because it is! Some redness, swelling, and oozing of plasma, ink, and even small amounts of blood are totally normal. The area will feel sore and warm to the touch, especially within the first 24–48 hours.

Pro Tip:Gently wash the area with fragrance-free soap and pat it dry. Apply a thin layer of healing ointment recommended by your artist. And don’t re-bandage unless advised.

Stage 2: Scabbing and Itching (Days 4–14)

What’s Normal:As your skin starts to regenerate, scabs will form. This stage also brings the itch — a sign your skin is healing. The scabs may be light or thick, depending on the size and placement of your tattoo. Keep your tattoo clean and moisturized with fragrance-free lotion.

What’s NOT Normal:Avoid scratching, picking, or peeling, as this can cause color loss and scarring. If the area becomes extremely red, puffy, or starts oozing pus, this could be a sign of infection.

Stage 3: Peeling and Flaking (Days 10–20)

What’s Normal:Your tattoo might start to peel like a sunburn, revealing dull, cloudy skin underneath. Don't worry — that’s just the new skin forming over your ink.

Pro Tip:Keep your tattoo clean and moisturized, and let the peeling process happen naturally.

Stage 4: Settling In (Weeks 3–6)

What’s Normal:Your tattoo may still look a little dull or hazy, but that’s just the new skin still thickening and healing. By now, most of the surface healing is done.

Final Healing Check-In:Your tattoo should be fully healed on the surface, though deeper layers of the skin may take a bit longer. Once fully healed, the colors will “pop” again and lines will be crisp.
